About Millburn, NJ

Millburn is a township in the southwest region of Essex County, New Jersey. The township has a population of 20,149 residents and a total geographic area of 9.9 square miles. Millburn was formed from parts of Springfield Township in 1857, but the municipality did not initially go by the name “Millville.” The township’s official name was eventually adopted in recognition of streams (known in Scottish as “burns”) that led into local mills. Unincorporated communities in Millburn include Brantwood, Short Hills, White Oak Ridge, and Wyoming. The Essex County municipalities that border Millburn include Livingston, West Orange, and Maplewood.

Millburn is an affluent suburban community: the median household income in Millburn is approximately $151,000, which is more than double the median household income in the rest of New Jersey. Not surprisingly, the township has an extremely high cost of living: local residents pay the highest annual property tax bills in the entire state. Despite the high costs, many families choose to live in Millburn, New Jersey. According to the most recent Census, more than 70 percent of Millburn residents over the age of 15 are married. Additionally, nearly half of all households in the township have children under the age of 18.

Millburn has been called “one of the best places to live in New Jersey.” That’s because the township offers an excellent school system (the Millburn Township Public Schools), plenty of recreational activities (at the South Mountain Reservation, Old Short Hills Park, and Slayton Field Park), and a variety of entertainment and dining options (many of which can be found at The Mall at Short Hills).
