About the Montclair Area
Montclair is a township located in Essex County, New Jersey. Montclair has a total population of around 38,700 people and a total geographic area of approximately 6.3 square miles. Montclair was incorporated in 1868 and created from parts of Bloomfield, NJ. The township name comes from the French term mont clair, which is best translated as “clear mountain” or “bright mountain.” Montclair is situated on the side of the Watchung Mountains, a group of low-lying mountains known for providing scenic views of New York City and Newark. Unincorporated municipalities in Montclair, NJ include Frog Hollow, Montclair Heights, South End, and Upper Montclair.
According to the 2010 US Census, Montclair has just over 15,000 households and around 9,400 families. Approximately 27 percent of residents in Montclair are African American, which represents a slight decline from 32 percent in the 2000 US Census.
